Archie Battersbee, a little boy from Southend, Essex, who lived from 10 March 2010 to 6 August 2022, lost consciousness on 7 April 2022 as a result of an event at home. His mother, Hollie Dance, discovered him with a ligature over his head; she later said she thought he was participating in the “blackout challenge,” an online TikTok task. His mother then started performing CPR and dialing 911. He experienced a heart attack upon arriving to Southend University Hospital.

The High Court, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court, the European Court of Human Rights, and the United Nations eventually became involved in a legal dispute between Battersbee’s parents, who were supported by the Christian Legal Centre, and the Barts Health NHS Trust and a guardian acting on behalf of Battersbee. The Trust maintained that because Battersbee was brain dead, his therapy should end.

His mother said that “it is for God to decide what should happen to Archie, including if, when, and how he should die,” as they contended that he needed more time to recuperate and that his religious views should be taken into account.

Battersbee’s treatment should end, the courts repeatedly decided, and the family’s appeals of those decisions were all rejected. On August 6, 2022, the last of Battersbee’s life support was turned off, and he subsequently passed away.

Paul Battersbee (Father)

Hollie Dance (Mother)

Paul Battersbee, 57, and Hollie Dance, 46, are Archie’s parents, and they are both from Southend, Essex.

After being informed by the physicians that their son’s therapy should finish, the couple is battling to keep him on life support.

Doctors said that Archie’s brain is dead and decaying in some areas, and that his chances of recovery are “extremely low,” thus the case was brought before a judge to be resolved.

But although a high court judge earlier determined that stopping Archie’s treatment would be in the child’s best interest, his parents have launched a number of legal challenges to keep him on life support.

Challenge:

Archie Battersbee, 12, was discovered unresponsive in his house following what his mother suspects was an attempt at the TikTok trend known as the “Blackout Challenge,” in which participants hold their breath for as long as they can until frequently passing out.

Since April, Battersbee has been kept alive at the Royal London Hospital, but his family has fought to transfer him to a hospice so he can pass away “dignitively.”

What is “Blackout Challenge”

The “Blackout Challenge” is that the person posting it must hold their breath until they faint.

These kinds of online challenges are really dangerous since they can kill kids and permanently harm their brains by shutting off the oxygen supply.

Despite the trend’s widespread use on social media, TikTok was not the original source of the challenge.

After 10-year-old Nylah Anderson died from the same challenge, which led to her family suing the social media network, there was resentment toward TikTok and this challenge.

Siblings:

He is a sweet young boy. Quite bouncy; he exudes happiness all the time. Speaking of the little boy’s relationships with his siblings Lauren and Tom, Ms. Dance referred to them as a “strong little family.”
