Pinto was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Western India, on October 18, 1984 to Manglore, Karnataka, South India-based Mangalorean Catholic parents.

Her father Frederick Pinto worked as a senior branch manager for the Bank of Baroda in Bandra, West Mumbai, and her mother Sylvia Pinto served as the headmistress of St. John’s Universal School in Goregaon, West Mumbai. Sharon, her older sister, works for NDTV. 

Pinto was engaged to Rohan Antao, who had served as her publicist previously, before she started her film career. In January 2009, she called the relationship quits and started dating Dev Patel, who played her co-star in Slumdog Millionaire. The pair ended their six-year romance peacefully in December 2014. 

In November 2019, Pinto and photographer Cory Tran became engaged. Their wedding took place at the Honda Center in 2020.

In November 2021, she gave birth to their son.
