Giorgia Meloni was born on January 15, 1977 in Rome. Her mother was from Sicily, while her father, a tax advisor, moved the family to the Canary Islands when she was eleven years old. She was raised in the Garbatella neighbourhood. In 1992, while Meloni was 15 years old, he joined the Youth Front, the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement’s youth division (MSI). During this time, she established the student organisation Gli Antenati (The Ancestors), which participated in the demonstration against the public education reform proposed by minister Rosa Russo Iervolino.

She received a diploma from the Amerigo Vespucci Institute in 1996. Meloni stated that she earned a final grade of 60/60 while pursuing her high school diploma in languages at the Amerigo Vespucci Institute in Rome. But it found out that the school was actually a technical high school with a focus on the travel and tourism business, not a foreign language high school (and hence not authorised to grant a diploma in languages). This raised the question of whether or not she had lied about her degree.

With almost 44% of the vote, Ms. Meloni’s right-wing coalition, which also includes Matteo Salvini’s far-right League and former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right Forza Italia, will gain control of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

The stunning electoral victory of her own party covered up the fact that Forza Italia and Mr. Salvini’s party both performed poorly, with the former’s party dropping below 9% and the latter even lower. Brothers of Italy garnered less than 4% of the vote in the previous election, but this time around they profited from avoiding the national unity government that disintegrated in July.

Giorgia Meloni established herself as a far-right politician when she became the National Alliance party’s youngest-ever vice-president in 2006.

The National Alliance, originally known as the Italian Social Movement, was founded by Benito Mussolini’s allies and was openly neo-fascist. Although Meloni kept the tricolour flame representing the perpetual fire on the dictator’s tomb in the logo for the Brothers of Italy, the party she eventually co-founded in 2012, she later distanced herself from the dictator’s style of fascism.

Currently, it appears likely that the 45-year-old ultraconservative will become Italy’s first female prime minister.
