The daughter of a wealthy industrialist moved to Italy in the 1920s to establish an upscale British hotel in the beautiful town of Portofino as Benito Mussolini’s brand of fascism was on the rise.

Where Is Filmed:

‘Hotel Portofino’ is filmed in Portofino as well as Opatija, on the north Adriatic coast of Croatia. The drama is a visual feast that features plenty of breathtaking shots from both destinations.

Although most of the series is set in Portofino, Italy, many important scenes were shot on location in Croatia, particularly in locations where the production team finds similarities with the Italian landscape.

Episode 1 Recap:

The episode begins in Italy in 1926 as Hotel Portofino employees prepare for the arrival of new guests. Bella Ainsworth (Natasha McElhone) gives orders while Julia (Lucy Akhurst) and Rose Drummond-Ward (Claude Scott-Michel) ride the train.

Once the train reaches its destination, Julia tells her daughter, Rose, to be careful not to smudge her dress. Lucian Ainsworth (Oliver Dench) heads to the train station where he bumps into Constance March (Louis Binder).

Who Stars:

Natascha McElhone leads the cast as Bella Ainsworth, the owner of the hotel of the same name on the Italian Riviera that has to do with not only the rise of fascism, but a classic whodnit on her doorstep.

The cast of the Masterpiece show includes one of the most beloved actors from the cast of Four Weddings and A Funeral, as well as some actors with some serious showbiz family connections.

PBS Cast:

Constance (Louisa Binder) plays on the beach with Lottie (Maya Ramadan). Lucian (Oliver Dench) and Constance (Louisa Binder) discuss his painting. Roberto (Lorenzo Richelmy) goes for a swim. Constance (Louisa Binder) and Paola (Carolina Gonnelli) prepare a beach picnic.

In addition to a brief location shooting in Portofino, filming took place in Opatija, Croatia. “Nothing was going to last until we found this wonderful former ocean-view hotel in Opatija,” explains director Adam Wimpany.

PBS:

PBS’s new series Hotel Portofino won’t exactly substitute for the real thing, but this visually rich 1920s-set period drama set on the Italian coast offers soothing escapism that will appeal to fans of shows like Downton Abbey and The Durrells in Corfu.

The picture-perfect setting makes up for some of the show’s shortcomings. With only six hours of episodes, Hotel Portofino is packed with plenty of characters, some of whom are unfortunately underdeveloped. An interesting story involving Alice and her life as a war widow.
