Since 2019, Ilhan Abdullahi Omar has held the office of U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district. The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party is one she belongs to.

Omar was raised in Baidoa, Somalia, and was born on October 4, 1982, in Mogadishu, Somalia. She had seven siblings, including her sister Sahra Noor, and was the youngest. Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a colonel in the Somali army under Siad Barre and also a teacher trainer. He is a native Somali from the Majeerteen clan in northeastern Somalia. When Ilhan was two years old, her mother Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, a member of the Benadiri group of partially Yemeni heritage, passed away. Her father and grandfather, both moderate Sunni Muslims who rejected the dogmatic Wahhabi interpretation of Islam, nurtured her.

On November 8, 2016, Omar became the first Somali-American lawmaker in the country after defeating 44-year incumbent DFL Representative Phyllis Kahn in the state of Minnesota’s DFL primary. The 5th Congressional District of Minnesota, which covers Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs, is represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Ilhan Omar.

To represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House, Omar (Democratic Party) is seeking reelection. In the general election on November 8, 2022, she is a candidate. On August 9, 2022, she won the Democratic primary.

Omar, who represents Minnesota in Congress, was the first woman of colour to be elected.

She was also the nation’s first Somali-American to be elected to Congress. Omar left Somalia when she was eight years old, spending four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before arriving in the United States. Omar was one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, along with Rashida Tlaib.
