Miyake was born on April 22, 1938, in Hiroshima, where he was subjected to the American atomic bombing in August 1945 when he was 7 years old. Miyake didn’t discuss his experiences until 2009, when Barack Obama, then-president of the United States, pushed for a nuclear-weapons-free world.
He wanted to be a dancer when he was little. Studying his sister’s fashion periodicals sparked his interest in fashion. At the Tama Art University in Tokyo, he completed his graphic design studies in 1964. At the Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, he submitted fashion designs for competition. He didn’t succeed in a competition, though, because he couldn’t sew or make patterns.
He apprenticed as Guy Laroche’s assistant designer after graduating and enrolled at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne school in Paris. He produced between 50 and 100 sketches a day while working with Hubert de Givenchy.
He relocated to New York City in 1969, where he came into contact with artists like Christo and Robert Rauschenberg. He was employed by fashion designer Geoffrey Beene on Seventh Avenue while taking English lessons at Columbia University. When he moved back to Tokyo in 1970, he established the upscale women’s fashion manufacturer Miyake Design Studio.
