Judy Garland died of an accidental barbiturate overdose in London on 22 June 1969, less than two weeks after her 47th birthday. His extraordinary talents and weaknesses had made him one of the most enduringly popular Hollywood icons of the 20th century, and his funeral in New York City attracted nearly 22,000 mourners.

100th Birthday:

June 10, 2022 (Friday) was Judy Garland’s 100th birthday.

For many fans, she was a blazing talent and that was enough. But others were as fascinated by his personal life as by his performances. She was like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and a few others: it was hard to separate the tragic stories of her personal life from her work.

Garland began performing in vaudeville with her two older sisters as a child in a vaudeville group called “The Gum Sisters” and was later signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. She appeared in over two dozen films for MGM. Garland was a frequent on-screen partner of both Mickey Rooney and Gene Kelly and regularly collaborated with director and second husband Vincent Minnelli.

Her life was more melodramatic and complicated than any script, with a domineering stage mom and stern Hollywood exec, all of whom supplied her with drugs to keep her energy up.

Death:

Judy Garland died on 22 June 1969.

Garland was found dead in the bathroom of her rented house in Cadogan Lane, Belgravia, London.

Cause of Death:

During interrogation, Coroner Gavin Thurston stated that the cause of death was “reckless self-exaggeration” of barbiturates; He had the equivalent of ten 1.5-grain (97 mg) Seconal capsules in his blood.

Thurston insisted that the overdose was unintentional and that there was no evidence that he died by suicide.

After Garland’s body was embalmed, Dean traveled with her remains to New York City on June 26, where an estimated 20,000 people gathered at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, which remained open all night to accommodate rising crowd.

Spouse:

Judy Garland’s five husbands were: composer David Rose (1941-44), director Vincente Minnelli (1945-51), manager Sid Luft (1952-65), actor Mark Herron (1965-67), and restaurant manager Mickey Deans (1968 until her death).

Judy Garland’s fifth and final husband, Mickey Dean, was not particularly dear to their entire family. As played by Finn Wittrock in 20th Century Fox’s “Judy”, Dean was a smooth orator who worked his way into the legend’s life during his waning years.

Garland had three children: Liza Minnelli with director Vincent Minnelli, and Lorna and Joe Luft with producer Sid Luft. Luftw marks perhaps the most prominent step in Garland’s career, producing the 1954 film A Star Is Born as a return for the actress.

Before her tragic death at the age of 47 due to a barbiturate overdose, she was the mother of three children. She welcomed her first child, Liza Minnelli, in 1946 with her second husband and acclaimed director Vincente Minnelli. Her third marriage to businessman Sid Luft resulted in two other children. Their daughter Lorna Luft was born in 1952, and their only son, Joy Luft, was born in 1955.

Fragrance:

It should come as no surprise that the perfume bottles she was traveling with were spray (and not splash). The fluted one with a black-and-gold stopper is one by Lanvin, a creation by André Frasse, launched in 1922. The lace-like bottle is none other than Femme by Rochas, created by Edmund Rodnitska and launched in 1944.

The great actress’ children Liza Minnelli, 76, and Lorna Luft, 69, have created a limited-edition fragrance in honor of their centenary on June 10, 2022.

The artist, best remembered for her role as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz, as well as her iconic torch song Over the Rainbow, died in 1969 at the age of 47, an accidental drug addict died of overdose.
