On March 2, 1931, Gorbachev was born in the village of Privolnoye, Stavropol Krai, which at the time was a part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, one of the Soviet Union’s constituent republics. At the time, ethnic Russians and ethnic Ukrainians made up about equal portions of the population of Privolnoye. Gorbachev’s mother family were of ethnic Ukrainian descent and had come from Chernihiv, while his father family were ethnic Russians who had arrived in the area from Voronezh several generations before.
