Garrett played football, basketball, and track as a letterwinner at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas. He won the 2013 Landry Award, given to the best high school athlete in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and recorded 19.5 sacks as a senior in football.
Garrett was ranked as the second-best player overall in his class and a five-star prospect by the recruiting network Rivals.com. In October 2013, he pledged to play college football for Texas A&M.
