Conservatorship:
Since 2018, Nichols has been under a conservatorship. Following allegations that her previous manager, Gilbert Bell, had mistreated Nichols financially, her son Kyle Johnson successfully petitioned to be his mother’s guardian. Nichols is of sound mind, according to protesters, and wants out of the arrangement.
Kyle Johnson, Nichols’ lone child, was chosen as her person and estate’s conservator in January 2019. A few months later, the information was made public after Bell gave an Atlanta-based CBS station a disturbing video of Nichols, who has dementia, screaming in protest while holding what Bell claimed to be Johnson’s legal guardianship documents. In the video, Bell claimed that Johnson had filed the documents.

On the actor’s official Instagram, her son Kyle Johnson revealed that Nichols passed away on July 30 at her home from natural causes. Johnson published a picture of Nichols’ 1992 Hollywood Walk of Fame star, which she was given.
I regret to inform you that, as it has for so many years, a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us, Johnson wrote. “My mother, Nichelle Nichols, died away last night due to natural causes. Her light, however, will continue to exist for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and be inspired by, much like the old galaxies now being glimpsed for the first time.”
