When the 1988 and 1989 premierships were back-to-back, Dear was unable to enter the side and was frequently designated as an emergency.
He began playing regularly in 1990, participating in 23 games, and his form persisted into 1991. With two goals in the 1991 Grand Final victory over West Coast, he earned his premiership medallion and the Norm Smith Medal. By dominating over the Hawthorn half front line and assisting in many goals, Dear nearly single-handedly transformed a nine-point deficit into a ten-point halftime led.

When the Latrobe Valley was in the Hawthorn zone, the Dear brothers were hired. Dear, a half forward, made his professional debut in 1987 and participated in the Grand Final. He stepped in at full forward for the unavailable Jason Dunstall, but his team lost.
Pancreatic cancer was identified as Dear’s condition in 2020. Just one week before Hawthorn was scheduled to participate in the “Dare to Hope” match to support Dear’s charitable foundation, he passed away in July 2022.
On July 8, 2022, he died of pancreatic cancer.
