Phil Mickelson: 4 Putt, Cuts Made, Tracker, What Did Say, College
Phil Mickelson is out of contention at the US Open, missing out on the cut in his first major since joining the controversial Saudi-backed LIV golf series.
Four Putt:
Unfortunately for Mickelson, all the work he put in at the beginning of the week seems to be for naught. As he started his first round at The Country Club on Thursday, Mickelson, celebrating his 52nd birthday, was struggling hard on the greens.
He bogeyed three of his first five holes, taking nine puts. Then came the par-3 sixth, where Mickelson hit his approach shot 12 feet on the 196-yard hole. It was only his second beat in regulation that day, and his first valid birdie opportunity.
Cuts Made:
Did he make the cut?
Phil Mickelson was among the most popular golfers to miss the cut. Mickelson came into the week as one of the main stories given his decision to join LIV Golf and the controversy surrounding that tour.
Starting his latest career slam effort with 8 overs 78, the six-time runner-up followed up his opening run with 3 overs 73 on Friday. Continually failing to split the fairway and struggling with a putter in hand, Mickelson’s US Open was cut short for the third time since 2016.
Tracker:
Ever since it was reported that Phil Mickelson would not play at The Masters tournament this year, speculation has been rife that the Masters may have asked him not to play.
However, as we learned during Chairman Fred Ridley’s press conference on Wednesday, that was not the case.
Back in February, Mickelson came under fire after comments about the new Saudi golf league he is supporting, and allegedly helped him off the field. After that, Mickelson apologized to the Saudis, but not to the PGA Tour.
What Did Say:
“They’re scary motherf***ers to get involved with. We know they killed Khashoggi,” Mickelson said, “and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it?
Phil Mickelson’s comments on the new Saudi golf league sparked controversy in April among fellow players and fans, including Rory McIlroy.
He said he believed the money produced by the Saudi Golf League would help promote the sport, and the money could be used to reshape the nature of the PGA tour. Mickelson first remarked about the Saudis to golf writer Alan Shipnk, who is writing a biography on it.
