Philip Baker Hall is an American actor who portrayed Joe Bookman on Seinfeld. He appeared in two episodes: “The Library” and “The Finale”.
To many, Hall was instantly recognizable for one of the most powerfully funny guest appearances on Seinfeld.
In the 1991 sitcom’s 22nd episode, Hall played library investigator Lieutenant Joe Buchman, who follows Seinfeld for a year-overdue copy of Tropic of Cancer.

Although Hall’s cause of death was not announced, he suffered from emphysema and was dependent on oxygen tanks, as The Washington Post reported in 2017.

The actor said he was often stopped on the street because people recognized him as Seinfeld — even 20 years after the episode aired.
“It’s been over 20 years since that episode was shot, and I still can’t go out in public for very long before someone says ‘My God, it’s Bookman!’ Say. Or: ‘Are you a bookman? I returned that library book, I swear!'” the late actor told Rolling Stone in 2014.

Hall was born in Toledo, Ohio. His mother was Alice Burden, and his father, William Alexander Hall, was a factory worker in Montgomery, Alabama.
He attended the University of Toledo. He served as a United States Army translator and high school teacher in Germany. He worked for Off-Broadway and Broadway productions in New York City.

After not starting acting until the age of 30, Hall made first guest appearances in myriad TV series such as Good Times, Man from Atlantis, M*A*S*H and Quincy Me, before landing a role in the 1987 prison drama Mariah.
He also appeared in several episodes of Family Ties, Falcon Crest, Civil Wars, The Practice and Seinfeld (as Library Cop Lieutenant Joe Buchman).
