Scottish cross-country athlete Rab Wardell passed away at the age of 37 after having a heart attack last night while he was sleeping.
He had won the Scottish MTB XC Championship only two days ago, adding it to the junior and U23 national titles he had won nearly two decades earlier. Despite being at an age when most riders transition out of their full-time careers, Wardell had something of a breakthrough season this year. Wardell had a history of acting uniquely. He suffered with overtraining and other problems following a multidisciplinary racing stint in the 2000s, and eventually left professional racing to launch Wardell Cycle Coaching and concentrate on expanding that for the following seven years.

Rab Wardell, a mountain biker who competed in and won the Scottish MTB XC Championships, passed away at the age of 37.
Tuesday night, Scottish Cycling announced that Wardell had passed away peacefully. On Monday night, Wardell spoke about his victory on Sunday on BBC Scotland’s The Nine programme.
Scottish Cycling released a statement saying, “We are devastated to confirm the news that international mountain biker and former employee, Rab Wardell, passed away today.”

Wardell, a resident of Glasgow who has been competing in mountain bike races since he was a youngster, only recently made the transition to the professional ranks. British Cycling hailed Wardell’s victory at Kirroughtree Forest a few days ago as “a show of remarkable resilience” as he overtook the early race leaders to claim the victory.
Apparently just two days after winning the Scottish title, Rab passed away in his sleep. His age was 37.
