On a day when baseball commemorated its African American past with a game in Birmingham, Alabama, baseball great Reggie Jackson gave fans a sobering history lesson on Thursday by recounting the bigotry Black players endured in the segregated South of the 1960s.

“When I went inside restaurants, people would yell, ‘The nigger can’t dine here,’ pointing at me. Before a game between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals at Birmingham’s historic Rickwood Field, Jackson, 78, said on a live Fox Sports telecast, “I would go to a hotel and they would say, ‘The nigger can’t stay here.”

Reggie Jackson is still very much alive and well and a well-known figure in the sports world. His remarkable career and legendary persona are demonstrated by his continuing presence, which has left an enduring impression on baseball history.

Jackson’s father supported him in athletics, and he went on to become a standout player at Pennsylvania’s Cheltenham High School, where he excelled in football, baseball, and track. He batted and pitched left-handed and was a terrific pitcher as well. At Arizona State University (Tempe), he pursued his athletic career; nevertheless, after just two years, he turned pro. He was a player with the American League Kansas City Athletics farm teams from 1967 to 1968. After the organization relocated to Oakland, California in 1968, he signed on with the Athletics and stayed with them until the end of the 1975 season. He established himself as a superb base runner and home run hitter. In 1973 and 1975, he was the league’s home run leader. Jackson was a player with the World Series-winning Athletics (1972–1974).
