The long-awaited middleweight grudge match between Shields and Marshall will take place on the same card as Mikaela Mayer and Alycia Baumgardner’s three-belt unification at 130 pounds. Shields and Marshall will also be competing for undisputed championship status.
Who Wins:
Shields lost to Marshall, although the match took place ten years ago, when Shields was a 17-year-old amateur. Since that defeat in 2012, Shields has gone 50-0 in the ring, captured two Olympic gold medals, and reigned supreme in two separate weight divisions.
The two boxed in the early rounds of the amateur World championships more than ten years ago. In addition to being the most difficult defeat of Shields’ boxing career, it is still the only defeat she has ever suffered.
Shields yearned to compete in the Olympics at the age of just 17. The American required the fighter who defeated her to triumph in the middleweight final because this was the lone qualification event and she had already lost.
