Stefan Banach was born into a Góral Roman Catholic family on March 30, 1892, at St. Lazarus General Hospital in Kraków, which was then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father then had him baptized. Banach was raised by his Podhale-born parents, Stefan Greczek and Katarzyna Banach.

Lucja Braus is the name of Stefan Banach’s wife. In Kraków, Austria-Hungary, in 1920, he married ucja Braus. Stefan Banach Jr., his son, was born to him.

South of Kraków, around 50 kilometres away, in a tiny community named Ostrowsko, Stefan Greczek was born. Banach was transferred to his grandmother’s house in Ostrowsko after his baptism.

However, Stefan Greczek arranged for Franciszka Plowa, who lived in Kraków with her daughter Maria, to raise his son when Banach’s grandmother fell ill. Banach never returned to live with his grandmother, but he did pay her many visits as he got older.

Juliusz Mien, a French academic who served as Maria’s guardian, saw Banach’s abilities right away. The young youngster learned French from Mien, who also instilled a love of learning in him.

Banach was forced to feed lice during the occupation for a German study on infectious diseases. Before he could resume his academic career with a scheduled job at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, he passed away from lung cancer in 1945.
