Controversy:

The Little Mermaid (2023): Controversy, Budget, Reddit, Woke

Disney said last week that the next live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” which is scheduled to begin filming in early 2020, will star black actress and R&B singer Halle Bailey as Ariel. Disney has never before chosen a woman of colour to play a typically white princess in one of its live-action versions.

Ariel had blue eyes, pale complexion, and vivid red hair when she first appeared on TV almost 3 decades ago.

Ariel is a fictitious character, unlike Pocahontas and Mulan, who have historical roots, hence some have argued that her ethnicity isn’t crucial to the plot. Others, meanwhile, made fun of the uproar. “I’m offended by the casting of a woman of colour as Ariel,” a user tweeted.

As the premiere date of the film approaches, its budget and release schedule will be decided. The original movie had a $135 million budget, with a $80 million production cost cap. The live-action remake, though, will cost about $160 million. More information on the cast, budget, and review of The Little Mermaid 2023 will be available. A timeless Disney film with a contemporary twist.

Disney fans are interested to see how they will adapt this classic with the upcoming 2023 release of the live-action The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, and the numerous live-action Disney adaptations that have been published over the past ten years.

The movie will be released in May 2023, which is almost 9 months from now. The pandemic caused a 2021 postponement of the filming.

Woke:

Recently, Pixar and Disney have explored a range of culturally diverse storylines and protagonists, such as Moana, which has a Polynesian theme, Encanto, which is set in Columbia, Coco, which is set in Mexico, and Raya and the Last Dragon, which has Southeast Asian influences.

Despite these initiatives, Bailey observes that almost all of the studio’s princesses in the past have been white figures, with the exception of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin and Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, who is renowned for being the first Black princess in the Disney Princess franchise.

Given this background, a lot of negative viewers have wrongfully criticised Disney and filmmaker Rob Marshall for choosing Bailey as Ariel since it was a “woke” choice.
