Political figure William Lodewyk Crowther, FRCS (15 April 1817 – 12 April 1885), served as Tasmania’s premier from 20 December 1878 to 29 October 1879.

Why Hobart is voting for removal of William Crowther Statue?
The Hobart City Council has decided to take down the statue of former Tasmanian premier William Crowther from a park in the heart of the city, but a historian claims that other persons with considerably worse records are honoured in the same public place.
The body of Aboriginal man William Lanne was being kept in a mortuary in Hobart in the 1860s when Crowther, a surgeon, broke in, removed his skull, and sent it to a museum. The skull of another body was then placed in its place.
For his “political and professional service to the colony,” the statue of Crowther was placed in Franklin Square in 1889. Last night, however, Hobart councillors voted 7–4 to remove the statue.
As stated in the motion, after receiving planning approval, the bronze portion of the statue will be taken down, leaving the plinth in situ.
The statue itself will be maintained; it will initially be moved to the city’s treasures collection but may eventually be reinterpreted somewhere else.
Temporary signage detailing the choice will be installed on the property; a long-term installation will be decided upon later.
